Who was he? What did he want?

That same afternoon, a shabby old saddlebum limped into town. His clothes were little better than rags. His hat was so worn and battered that the felt had lost its stiffness, and the limp brim all but obscured his face.

His back was hunched so severely that he could only look at the ground in front of him. In an ultimate sign that the stranger was down and out, this sorry looking specimen was on foot.

It was the hottest time on a day of merciless heat. Almost no one was on the street, and the few who were not asleep or sitting in the shade somewhere took no interest in the ragged old man.

One minute he was there, at the end of the street. Next minute, he was gone.
