I’m a real ornery bastard when I’m riled!

Bob Fargo stood at the foot of the three graves after the mourners had left. Hearing a sound behind him, he turned.

“Dolores . . .”

“I wish to speak with you,” she said.

“I’m going away,” he said.

“To the girl?”

“More than the girl. A man. By now they might be married.”

“You are jealous and wish for revenge?”

“Then why are you going back?”

“I ran away from the man. He wanted the girl and so did I. She chose me. He said that if I didn’t leave town, he’d kill me. I left.” He gestured at the graves. “These men taught me that the most important thing in life is to be a man. That is why I must go back . . . to be a man.”
