      I may be young, but I work . . .

ON MY LONESOME

Judah talked on, almost as if Whit Macklin was no longer there.

“Most men are fools, and so are most women. I make it possible for them to make fools of themselves the easiest way they can.” He laughed and added, “They lose, I win. That’s how it goes, Whit.”

“Uh-huh,” Macklin said. “What’s the job you want done?”

Judah looked at him and grinned.

“You don’t get sidetracked, do you? I like that. Matter of fact, there’s a whole lot of things I like about you, Whit. We talk the same language. You stick with me and I’ll take you places you never dreamed you could go.”

“Right now I want to go to Arizona,” Macklin said.

Judah looked at him and smiled again.

“I can see you have plenty of sand, but I want you to know you’ll need all that and more when you get to Rimrock.”

“That’s where the job is?”

“Yes, it is. I sent four men there already. Only one came back, and he kept on ridin’.”

“What about the other three?”

“They’re still in Rimrock, reside in Boothill.”
