“We need gold, Major. Not useless Confederate paper money, not even Yankee paper money. We need gold to show these men that we’re right behind them and that if they fight for Texas they’ll be rewarded — in gold!”
“Makes sense,” Warden allowed. “Trouble will be getting our hands on enough of it.”
Flood smiled crookedly, and for a moment Warden felt the warmth of the man’s charisma. It wouldn’t be all that hard to let his cynicism slide a notch and stand by this fanatic’s side — and maybe die for Texas. So he would have to make sure he didn’t fall under the spell that was bringing in new volunteers each day.
“I can do it, Major, with your help. I can get the gold I need to back these fine men.”
Hell, these fine men were a ragtag bunch . . .
