“Where are you going, Craig?” Kathy said quickly.
She put a restraining hand on his arm.
“You’re not going to do anything foolish, are you? I mean, Kurt is—”
“I’m not going to brace him, Kathy. I’ve told you a hundred times. I’m a sodbuster, not a fighting man. But this . . .” He flipped the tiny lump of lead in his hand. “This means I’ve got to do something. I’m going to report it to Sheriff Wales.”
“We’ve talked about this before, Craig. We know the sheriff can’t do much, even if he is a friend of yours.”
“It’s his duty to act when a man gets shot at on his own land.”
“Normally, yes it is. But this thing isn’t normal, Craig, and you know it.”
