The man with the barbed-wire soul!
When he had their attention, he pulled his Smith & Wesson.“Gentlemen,” he said, “this is a Smith & Wesson .38-caliber handgun. Very accurate, very well made.” He holstered it, and I noticed none of the prisoners seemed all that impressed. Then Trapp held up the shotgun. They all stared at it. “This, gentlemen, is a pump-action shotgun made by the Remington Company. In case you aren’t familiar with it, I’ll tell you that I can fire it as quickly as a handgun. I could aim at your shoe tops and the ensuing blast pattern would take you off at the hips. I have absolutely no qualms about using it. It would behove each and every one of you to remember that should any silly notions begin bouncing around in your empty skulls. Remember, all the Wanted posters say dead or alive. It makes little difference to me if I deliver you or your corpses.
”As soon as he was done, he turned on his heel and went back to his wagon. He climbed into the seat and started the team.
“What was all that about?” one of the prisoners asked me.
“Start trouble and he’ll blow your head off.”
